Football Preview: Cottondale Hornets vs. Wewahitchka Gators
The Cottondale Hornets will take on the Wewahitchka Gators at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Cottondale has four straight wins, Wewahitchka has five straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Last Friday, Cottondale made easy work of Lighthouse Private Christian Academy and carried off a 54-28 victory. The Hornets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three contests by 26 points or more this season.
Cottondale's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Cameron Odom led the charge by rushing for 120 yards and three touchdowns on only eight carries, while also throwing for 105 yards and a touchdown on only six passes. Tramond Collins was another key receiver, gaining 223 total yards and two touchdowns.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Cottondale was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 454 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in October of 2023.
Cottondale wouldn't let Lighthouse Private Christian Academy keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Cottondale can thank Wyatt Speers and Jayson Harris for forcing both of them.
Meanwhile, Wewahitchka scored the most points they've had all season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They fell just short of Jefferson County by a score of 18-16.
Cottondale's win bumped their record up to 4-0. As for Wewahitchka, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-4.
