The Phoenix Christian Cougars will head out on the road to face off against the Fountain Hills Falcons at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. Phoenix Christian is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 15.2 runs per game this season.
Phoenix Christian managed to slip by Camp Verde the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Cougars lost 12-1 to the Cowboys on Wednesday. The matchup marked the Cougars' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Phoenix Christian saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brianna Guerrero, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run.
Meanwhile, Fountain Hills won against Highland Prep West on Thursday with 20 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Tuesday. Everything went the Falcons' way against Red Rock as they made off with a 20-4 victory. The Falcons might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by ten runs or more this season.
Shania Rivera made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over five innings pitched. Rivera was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That double was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Mia Espinoza was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Sammantha Hughes was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and four runs.
Fountain Hills always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. They are 6-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Phoenix Christian's defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 6-1 and their overall record down to 15-4. As for Fountain Hills, they now have a winning record of 6-5.
Thursday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Phoenix Christian has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .593. However, it's not like Fountain Hills struggles in that department as they've averaged .568. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Phoenix Christian came out on top in a nail-biter against Fountain Hills in their previous matchup on April 1st, sneaking past 10-9. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
