League recap: Canterbury climbs in standings with win

Canterbury was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fifth to third in Gulf Atlantic - Gulf. The Cougars vanquished Marco Island Academy 46-36 earlier in the week.

Community School of Naples scaled the state rankings by moving to 327 from 413 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Seahawks climbed the ranks as a result of defeating Neumann 17-14.

Community School of Naples' dynamic duo of Michael Conroy and Dan Paul proved tough for the Celtics to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Conroy threw for 18 yards and 18 touchdowns and Paul had 42 yards receiving. George Schmelzle helped Community School of Naples' passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 47 yards.

Damon Jones' team's dynamic duo of Conroy and Paul proved to be unstoppable against Neumann, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.

Conroy put up the best numbers through the air as the Seahawks beat Steve Howey's team.

Drew Tomaini provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Community School of Naples bested the Celtics. He completed 19 passes for 204 yards and also ran for 22 yards.

Paul was the best receiver in the league this week as the Seahawks defeated Neumann.

Nick Rodhouse made the biggest impact on defense this week as St. Stephen's Episcopal lost to Trinity Prep. The 6-foot-3 junior forced 2 fumbles.

Luc Goeders was the most successful running back in Gulf Atlantic - Gulf this week. He ran for 37 yards on 4 carries as the Falcons bested the Celtics. Sam Dages also contributed to the rushing game with 25 yards on the ground.

Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, the Seahawks' Tomaini and Schmelzle have proven to be a lethal combination. Tomaini has thrown for 602 yards this season, while Schmelzle has 11 catches for 177 yards. St. Stephen's Episcopal's Jordan Murrell leads the league in rushing yards with 179.

The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Community School of Naples takes on second place St. Stephen's Episcopal. Last week, Community School of Naples bested Neumann, while the Falcons lost to the Saints.

Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when the Seahawks' Schmelzle goes up against St. Stephen's Episcopal's Garrett Barnes.

Next week's game between Community School of Naples and the Falcons will feature a good passing match up as Tomaini will test his arm against Barnes' defensive ability.

The league will see a high scoring game when the Seahawks and St. Stephen's Episcopal face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Community School of Naples comes in having scored 113 this season, while the Falcons have scored 98. The Seahawks scored 17 points last week as they beat the Celtics.
