It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact the Iona Prep Gaels can now relate to. They were just a hair shy of victory on Saturday and fell 30-29 to Cardinal Hayes. Iona Prep's defeat signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.
When it comes to explaining why Iona Prep lost, one person who can't be blamed is Joey Gaston. Despite the final result, he rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 314 yards on 21 of 30 attempts. The team also got some help courtesy of Steven Dowdy jr, who picked up 156 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Iona Prep's defeat dropped their record down to 8-4. As for Cardinal Hayes, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-2.
Iona Prep does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Cardinal Hayes is on the road again on Thursday and play against Mt. St. Michael Academy at 10:30 a.m. on November 23rd. Mt. St. Michael Academy is on a six-game streak of home wins, Cardinal Hayes a three-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the field.
