Preview: Columbus Falcons vs. Callaway Chargers
The Columbus Falcons will head out on the road to take on the Callaway Chargers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
Last Tuesday, Columbus faced Vicksburg in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The matchup between the two teams wasn't particularly close, with Columbus falling 61-47. They have been going strong on the season, but this is now their second defeat in a row.
Meanwhile, even though Warren Central scored an imposing 68 points on Tuesday, Callaway still came out on top. Callaway escaped with a win against Warren Central by the margin of a single free throw, 69-68. The win made it back-to-back wins for Callaway.
Callaway relied on the efforts of Braxton Ward, who scored 25 points along with two steals, and Javarian Mallard, who scored 21 points along with six rebounds and five steals. Ward continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Derek Byrd was another key contributor, scoring four points along with 11 rebounds.
Columbus has been struggling recently, as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 16-6 record this season. As for Callaway, the victory got them back to even at 13-13.
Columbus was able to grind out a solid victory over Callaway in their previous matchup on January 9th, winning 73-66. The rematch might be a little tougher for Columbus since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
