Basketball Recap: Cass Lake-Bena Takes a Loss

Cass Lake-Bena was the 85-51 winner over Red Lake when they last played one another two weeks ago, but their luck changed this time around. The Cass Lake-Bena Panthers fell just short of the Red Lake Warriors by a score of 90-87 on Monday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Panthers came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Minnesota basketball rankings (they are ranked 154th, while the Warriors are ranked 330th).

Red Lake's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Marcello Loud led the charge by going 11 of 21 on his way to 27 points in addition to six assists and six boards. That's the most assists Loud has posted since back in February of 2024. Tyrone Beaulieu Jr was another key player, dropping a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds.

Cass Lake-Bena's defeat was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 9-7. As for Red Lake, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-7.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cass Lake-Bena will venture away from home to challenge Mountain Iron-Buhl at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Red Lake has already played their next matchup (against Pine River-Backus), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
