Basketball Recap: Cristo Rey Comes Up Short

Cristo Rey was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their tenth straight loss. They had to suffer through a 71-27 loss at the hands of the Hopewell Blue Devils. The Royals were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 43-12.

Hopewell's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Deshawn Spellman led the charge by putting up 11 points in addition to six assists and three steals. Spellman has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last five times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Stephon Cherry, who went 6 for 9 on his way to 14 points and three steals.

Cristo Rey's defeat dropped their record down to 0-10. As for Hopewell, they pushed their record up to 8-1 with the victory, which was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season.

Cristo Rey will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Southern Maryland Christian Academy at 11:00 a.m. on January 11th. As for Hopewell, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 50-34 win against Manchester on the 28th.
