Basketball Recap: Penasco Find Success

Penasco hadn't done well against Clayton recently (they were 0-5 in their previous five matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Penasco Panthers managed a 45-40 victory over the Clayton Yellowjackets. For the Panthers, this counts as revenge for the 52-48 win the Yellowjackets walked away with the last time they faced one another back in December of 2023.

Kaileb Atencio continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, going 6 for 15 on his way to 16 points in addition to five rebounds and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Nehemiah Chavez, who posted eight points and eight rebounds.

Penasco smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in six consecutive matchups.

Penasco is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 9-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.3 points per game. As for Clayton, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-5 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Penasco will head out to take on Pecos at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Clayton, they and Des Moines will face off at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played.
