The Leechburg Blue Devils will challenge the Serra Catholic Eagles at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Leechburg is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.
Leechburg will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs on Tuesday, then bounced right back against Ellis on Monday. The Blue Devils blew past Ellis 12-2. While the Blue Devils didn't have the best season last year (they finished 0-5), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Addie Zanotto was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. Zanotto was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing four bases while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Emily Talarico was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. She also brought in two RBI, marking her first of the season. Danica Sopcak was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Leechburg always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .588. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ellis only posted an OBP of .250.
Meanwhile, Serra Catholic was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss dating back to last season. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 3-2 heartbreaker at the hands of South Allegheny. On the bright side, the two- run performance marked the Eagles' highest-scoring game to date.
Serra Catholic saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Keyara Watkins, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Leechburg has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for Serra Catholic, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-4.
Serra Catholic's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Leechburg has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .587. It's a different story for Serra Catholic, though, as they've only averaged .168. Will they be able to contain Leechburg's hitters?
Leechburg suffered a grim 10-1 defeat to Serra Catholic in their previous meeting back in March of 2022. Can the Blue Devils avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
