Also, DuPont wins 100th game; Cerveny wins first; CR high school baseball off to hot start.

It’s not often that a high school pitcher strikes out 18 batters in a six-inning game. But it’s even less often, when that does occur, that his team has to rally in the last inning for the win.

But that’s exactly what happened Thursday when Hodgson Vo-Tech senior Jamie Treml struck out 18 batters, pitching a one-hitter for Hodgson Vo-Tech in a 3-2 win.

Unfortunately for Treml, that one hit was a two-run home run by Corey Purnell in the top of the sixth inning to give Delaware Military Academy a 2-0 lead. But the Silver Eagles rallied to preserve Treml’s gem, scoring three runs in the bottom of the frame and coming away with the win when Matt Anderson scored the game-winning run on Billy White’s infield single.

2. DuPont wins 100th game: Brad DuPont, in his ninth year at the helm of the Tower Hill boys lacrosse program, won his 100th game Saturday when the Hillers opened up their season with an 11-4 win over visiting St. Andrew’s (0-2). Chas Robino led Tower Hill with three goals and three assists.

3. Newark gives rookie head coach first win: Newark’s first-year girls lacrosse coach Jen Cerveny picked up her first career win as the Yellowjackets easily defeated Glasgow, 21-2, in a Blue Hen Flight A Conference game. Senior Jennifer Sauer tallied six goals and sophomore Jordan Broccoli and freshman Shawna Chopko added five each for the Yellowjackets.

4. Caesar Rodney off to hot start on the diamond: Junior Zachary Mawson struck out 14 and tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Riders to a 3-0 win over Sussex Tech in a Cape Henlopen North Conference game. Junior outfielder Gary Jones singled in what would become the game-winning run in the top of the first inning for Caesar Rodney (3-1).

First-rate performances in the First State

* Jake Milstead (Newark): The senior catcher was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and five RBI in Newark’s 13-3 win over Brandywine. Milstead then followed that up with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate in the Yellowjackets’ 10-1 win over Delcastle on Saturday.

* Jamie Treml (Hodgon Vo-Tech): The junior pitcher struck out 18 batters in the Silver Eagles’ 3-2 win over Delaware Military Academy.

* C.J. Jones (A.I. du Pont): The state’s football player of the year anchored the boys’ 800-meter relay team to a new school record (1:31.32) at the Diamond State Relays on Saturday. Jones is attending Boston College on a football scholarship in the fall, where he is slated to play defensive back.

* Demetrius Murray (Tower Hill): The senior goalie recorded 14 saves in his team’s 11-4 win over St. Andrews in an Independent Schools Conference boys lacrosse game.
