Softball Game Preview: Metamora Redbirds vs. Geneseo Maple Leafs

Metamora is on a three-game streak of home wins, while Geneseo is on a five-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Redbirds will host the Maple Leafs at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Metamora 2.6, Geneseo 3.7) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Metamora barely beat Normal Community the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Redbirds blew past the Ironmen 8-1 on Wednesday. The result was nothing new for the Redbirds, who have now won nine games by six runs or more so far this season.

Meanwhile, Geneseo earned a 5-1 victory over Alleman on Thursday.

Kendyl Wassenhove made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Penny Kline, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI. Lillian Brown was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Geneseo's win bumped their record up to 14-7-1. As for Metamora, their victory bumped their record up to 16-5.

Metamora was able to grind out a solid win over Geneseo when the teams last played back in May of 2022, winning 6-2. Will the Redbirds repeat their success, or do the Maple Leafs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
