Football Preview: Roosevelt Roughriders vs. Bell Griffins

Suggested Video

The Roosevelt Roughriders are taking a road trip to face off against the Bell Griffins at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

While Roughriders fans will have to keep waiting for their team to come home, they shouldn't be too worried about the road trip considering the result of Friday's season opener. They strolled past Bishop O'Connell with points to spare last Friday, taking the game 28-10. Given the Roughriders' advantage in MaxPreps' football rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 12th in District of Columbia, while the Knights are ranked 236th in Virginia), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Roosevelt's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Deyon Smith, who rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown on only ten carries. Smith also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, picking up a sack and making ten total tackles (4.0 for loss). Jamal Gilmore also helped with two touchdowns in total.

Meanwhile, Bell humbled Central with a 51-12 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Griffins.

Antonio` Washington had an outrageously good game as he rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown on only 13 carries, and also threw for 45 yards and two touchdowns. His rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his fifth straight game with at least 102 rushing yards dating back to last season. Jayden Watts did his part for the team as well, scoring a TD off of 97 receiving yards.

Bell wouldn't let Central keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Bell can thank Washington and Stephon Joshua for forcing both of them. The dominant performance gave him a new career- in total yards.
