Preview: Bonita Springs Bullsharks vs. Canterbury Cougars
Bonita Springs has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will face off against the Canterbury Cougars at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Bonita Springs will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings (they are ranked 435th, while Canterbury is ranked 63rd).
Last Friday, Bonita Springs was beaten by Estero 57-30. Bonita Springs has not had much luck with Estero recently, as the team's come up short the last four times they've met.
Despite the defeat, Bonita Springs saw an underclassman step up: Kyleigh Weick scored 14 points.
Meanwhile, Canterbury put another one in the bag on Thursday to keep their perfect season alive. They really took it to Mariner for the full four quarters, racking up a 58-22 win at home. Fans of Canterbury have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season ended as a blowout.
Canterbury's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kaya Langford led the charge by scoring 19 points. The game was Langford's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Casey O'connell was another key contributor, scoring 15 points.
Their wins bumped Bonita Springs to 2-4 and Estero to 4-1.
Tuesday's match is shaping up to be a scrappy matchup: Bonita Springs haven't given up the ball easily this season, having only averaged 0 turnovers per game. It's a different story for Canterbury, though, as they've been averaging 9.4 per game. Given Bonita Springs' sizeable advantage in that area, Canterbury will need to find a way to close that gap. Bonita Springs ended up a good deal behind Canterbury in their previous meeting back in November of 2022, losing 47-33. Can Bonita Springs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
