Softball Recap: Petoskey Has No Trouble Against Traverse City West

Petoskey hadn't done well against Traverse City West recently (they were 0-7 in their previous seven matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Northmen put the hurt on the Titans with a sharp 14-4 victory. The result was nothing new for the Northmen, who have now won nine games by seven runs or more so far this season.

Avery Leist made a big impact no matter where she played. She pitched six innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of her five plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Bre VerCautren, who went 4-for-5 with three runs, two RBI, and one double. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Lyla Janes was another key player, going 1-for-4 with three stolen bases and four runs.

Petoskey's win bumped their record up to 23-3. As for Traverse City West, their loss dropped their record down to 5-11.

Looking ahead, Petoskey will face off against Big Rapids at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Traverse City West, they will square off against Mona Shores at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.
