Softball Game Preview: Volcano Vista Hawks vs. Cibola Cougars

The Volcano Vista Hawks will venture away from home to take on the Cibola Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Volcano Vista is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak.

Things were looking good for Volcano Vista after they put the first runs on the board on Friday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They lost 18-7 to Cleveland. Hawks fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Storm since on Friday.

Breezy Griego made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. Genevieve Tapia also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Meanwhile, Cibola faced Farmington in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Cougars came out on top against the Scorpions by a score of 7-2. The win continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Scorpions: they've now won four in a row.

Cibola's victory was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 16-4. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games. As for Volcano Vista, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-11.

Volcano Vista came out on top in a nail-biter against Cibola in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, sneaking past 9-8. Do the Hawks have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cougars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
