Basketball Recap: Mount Vernon Comes Up Short

Mount Vernon lost against Hayfield back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Mount Vernon Majors took a blow against the Hayfield Hawks, falling 54-27. While losing is never fun, the Majors can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 125th, while the Hawks are ranked 36th).

Defeat or not, Mount Vernon got some senior leadership from Rachael Sykes and Tori Barnes. Sykes posted 15 points and eight boards, while Barnes had six points. Barnes is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last five games she's played.

Mount Vernon's loss dropped their record down to 11-9. As for Hayfield, the win (which was their 12th in a row) raised their record to 17-5.

Mount Vernon has already played their next matchup, a 57-39 victory against Annandale on the 13th. As for Hayfield, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 74-40 win against Justice on the 13th.
