Softball Game Preview: Wheeling Wildcats vs. Warren Township Blue Devils

The Wheeling Wildcats will take on the Warren Township Blue Devils at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Wheeling is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.

Wheeling came out on top against Waukegan on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive 12-run fourth inning. The Wildcats put the hurt on the Bulldogs with a sharp 18-3 victory. The Wildcats haven't had any issues with the Bulldogs recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

Wheeling let Alaina Costello and Mia Smith run wild. Costello went a perfect 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs, while Smith got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Those three stolen bases gave Smith a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jessica Niznik, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.

Wheeling always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .676. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Meanwhile, Warren Township didn't have quite enough to beat Libertyville on Friday and fell 7-6. The Blue Devils have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Warren Township's loss dropped their record down to 17-9. As for Wheeling, their victory bumped their record up to 9-15.

Wheeling suffered a grim 22-0 defeat to Warren Township when the teams last played back in May of 2022. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
