Baseball Recap: Beech Comes Up Short

Beech and Cookeville squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but Beech had to settle for second. They fell 7-3 to the Cavaliers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cavaliers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 13-2 on Thursday.

Liam Dougherty was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out six batters over 4.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Wyatt Davis and Jackson Kennedy stepped up to the plate in a big way. Davis went 1-for-3 with one home run, while Kennedy went 1-for-3 with one home run. That home run marked the first that Davis has launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Trevor McManamon, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.

This is the second loss in a row for Beech and nudges their season record down to 23-16. As for Cookeville, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 15 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 27-8 record this season.

While Beech had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair will be back at it again later today.
