Baseball Recap: Maine East Takes a Loss

Maine East extended their losing streak to seven on Monday, dropping their season record down to 2-10 in the process. They lost 16-5 to the Vernon Hills Cougars. If the Blue Demons were looking for revenge after losing 14-2 to the Cougars when the teams met back in April of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Jackson Slamowitz was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Keon Lapez, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.

As for Vernon Hills, the victory snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 5-12 record. That looming 16-5 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for them yet this season.

On Vernon Hills' side, Zach Gilfand looked comfortable as he pitched 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Nate Dugan, who went 3-for-6 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. Those two runs gave him a new career-high. DJ Biede also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

While Maine East had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
