Preview: East Nicolaus Spartans vs. Colusa RedHawks
East Nicolaus is 7-1 against Colusa since September of 2014, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The East Nicolaus Spartans will be playing at home against the Colusa RedHawks at 7:30 p.m.
Last Friday, East Nicolaus was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 28-24 to Live Oak. Despite 65 more yards than Live Oak, East Nicolaus couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Tristan Kotko, who gained 136 total yards. Logan Cleary was another key contributor, rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown on only 12 carries.
Meanwhile, Colusa put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They strolled past Winters with points to spare, taking the game 35-20.
William McCoy was a one-man wrecking crew for Colusa as he rushed for 192 yards and a touchdown while picking up 7.4 yards per carry, and also picked up 43 receiving yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Bo Coronado, who threw for 170 yards and three touchdowns.
East Nicolaus' loss dropped their record down to 5-4. As for Colusa, their win was their fifth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 9-0.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. East Nicolaus has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 226 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Colusa struggles in that department as they've been averaging 171.3 per game. It's looking like Friday's contest might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Everything came up roses for East Nicolaus against Colusa in their previous meeting back in November of 2022 as the team secured a 43-14 victory. Will East Nicolaus repeat their success, or does Colusa have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
