Basketball Recap: Eric Salazar Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Veterans Memorial

Los Fresnos won the last time they faced Veterans Memorial and things went their way on Friday too. The Los Fresnos Falcons came out on top against the Veterans Memorial Chargers by a score of 67-59. Given the Falcons' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 347th, while the Chargers are ranked 806th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Los Fresnos' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Eric Salazar led the charge by putting up 18 points along with eight steals and five boards. Those eight steals gave Salazar a new career-high. Gio Galvan was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on 14 points and nine boards.

Los Fresnos smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in seven consecutive matchups.

Los Fresnos is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 20-7 record this season. As for Veterans Memorial, their loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 10-17.

Los Fresnos will host Harlingen at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Harlingen's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last 12 contests. As for Veterans Memorial, they will head out to face off against San Benito at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. San Benito has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
