Preview: Florence Gophers vs. Valley Christian Trojans
The Florence Gophers will head out on the road to face off against the Valley Christian Trojans at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Florence came into Monday's match having lost three straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They managed a 46-40 win over San Tan Foothills on Monday. Winning is a bit easier when you work as a team to rack up eight more assists than your opponent, as Florence did.
Florence's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Keylee Scarbrough, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 20 rebounds. Scarbrough hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for three straight games. Madison Wetherell was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with five rebounds.
Meanwhile, Valley Christian had already won eight in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 31.6 points), and they went ahead and made it nine on Monday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Coolidge 44-42.
Florence's win ended a five-game drought at home and bumped them up to 9-15. As for Valley Christian, their victory was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 22-3.
Florence and Valley Christian were neck-and-neck in their previous meeting back in February of 2023, but Florence came up empty-handed after a 42-41 defeat. Can Florence avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
