Preview: Edison Eagles vs. St. Thomas Aquinas Trojans

Edison is 0-1 against St. Thomas Aquinas since October of 2022 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Edison Eagles will be playing in front of their home fans against the St. Thomas Aquinas Trojans at 7:00 p.m. Edison will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps New Jersey Rankings (they are ranked 186th, while St. Thomas Aquinas is ranked 12th).

Edison's 9-4 record from last season is now well into the rear view mirror after another tough outing. They fell just short of South Brunswick by a score of 30-27. Edison has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Despite their defeat, Edison saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Shaun Garland, who rushed for 58 yards and a touchdown, and also picked up 76 receiving yards, was perhaps the best of all. Anthony Calantoni was another key contributor, throwing for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, St. Thomas Aquinas put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their undefeated season alive. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat North Plainfield 49-0 at home. The result was nothing new for St. Thomas Aquinas, who have now won seven matches by 24 points or more so far this season.

St. Thomas Aquinas' success was spearheaded by the efforts of Elijah Abass-shereef, who rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown on only six carries, and Chase Young, who rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns on only ten carries. Abass-shereef was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 60 yards.

Edison's defeat dropped their record down to 3-5. As for St. Thomas Aquinas, their win was their tenth straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 8-0.

Edison came up short against St. Thomas Aquinas in their previous meeting back in October of 2022, falling 21-17. Thankfully for Edison, Jayden Young (who threw for 126 yards and four touchdowns while completing 87.5% of his passes) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
