Softball Recap: Hampshire Comes Up Short

Hampshire had lost eight straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped down to 0-19 to make it nine. They lost 17-0 to the Keyser Golden Tornado. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Golden Tornado this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 17-1 back in March.

As for Keyser, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-4 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games.

For Keyser's part, Leighton Johnson was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk). Johnson has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 17 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

In other batting news, Bibs Felton was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Sophie Lambka, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Hampshire will head out to challenge Frankfort at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Trojans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Falcons have averaged an impressive 7.8 runs per game this season. As for Keyser, they will venture away from home to face off against Bridgeport at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
