Basketball Game Preview: Horizon Hawks vs. Holy Family Tigers

The Horizon Hawks are taking a road trip to face off against the Holy Family Tigers at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

It was a Battle of the Birds when Horizon faced off against Broomfield on Friday. Horizon took a 59-41 bruising from Broomfield. While losing is never fun, the Hawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 80th, while the Eagles are ranked eighth).

Despite their defeat, Horizon saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Bella Alvarado, who posted 16 points, was perhaps the best of all. Another player making a difference was Kaitlin Schumann, who scored ten points and eight rebounds.

Meanwhile, Holy Family had to endure a three-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They walked away with a 58-48 victory over Silver Creek on Friday. The Tigers pushed the score to 53-33 by the end of the third, a deficit the Raptors cut but never quite recovered from.

Horizon better keep an eye on Alexcia Oaxaca. She was instrumental in Holy Family's win, almost dropping a double-double on 21 points and nine boards. That's the most rebounds Oaxaca has posted since back in January of 2024. Gracie Ward was another key player, putting up 14 points and seven boards.

Holy Family smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

Holy Family's win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 6-4. As for Horizon, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 8-5.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Horizon has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 29.3 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Holy Family struggles in that department as they've been averaging 27.4 boards.
