Softball Game Preview: Hunt Warriors vs. SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars

The Hunt Warriors will face off against the SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Hunt has struggled recently with three defeats in a row, while SouthWest Edgecombe will arrive with five straight victories.

Hunt fell victim to West Johnston and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They lost 20-0 to the Wildcats.

Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when SouthWest Edgecombe duked it out with North Pitt on Friday. SouthWest Edgecombe put the hurt on North Pitt with a sharp 13-2 win. The Cougars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by 11 runs or more this season.

Mackenzie Rogers made a splash while hitting and pitching. She kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 12 over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, Iyera Winstead and Mackenzie Moore did most of the damage at the plate: Winstead scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances, while Moore scored a run while going 2-for-4. What's more, Moore posted two doubles, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. Alana Carroll was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-5.

SouthWest Edgecombe kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in five consecutive matchups.

Hunt's loss dropped their record down to 3-8. As for SouthWest Edgecombe, their victory bumped their record up to 6-3.

Monday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Hunt has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .487. However, it's not like SouthWest Edgecombe struggles in that department as they've averaged .465. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
