Baseball Recap: Niles Notre Dame Comes Up Short

Niles Notre Dame entered their contest against St. Patrick on Monday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. The Dons fell just short of the Shamrocks by a score of 6-5. If the Dons were looking for revenge after losing 3-2 to the Shamrocks when the teams met back in May of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

James Spellman put in work no matter where he played. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Spellman was even better at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and one double.

In other pitching news, Christian Lopez was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

Spellman wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Dominic Holton, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3. Nico Roman also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Niles Notre Dame's defeat dropped their record down to 7-3-1. As for St. Patrick, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 6-6.

While Niles Notre Dame had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
