Basketball Game Preview: Covenant Day Lions vs. Providence Day Chargers

The Covenant Day Lions will head out to face off against the Providence Day Chargers at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Covenant Day took a loss when they played away from home last Monday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They took down Bradford Prep 68-50. Given the Lions' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 68th, while the Bears are ranked 205th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Covenant Day got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Chris Rivens out in front who went 6 for 10 on his way to 13 points and five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyree White, who went 6 of 10 on his way to 13 points in addition to seven assists and six rebounds.

Meanwhile, Providence Day ended the year with a bang, routing St. Albans 86-66 last Monday. The Chargers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight matchups by 20 points or more this season.

Providence Day pushed their record up to 13-4 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 74.3 points per game. As for Covenant Day, their victory bumped their record up to 10-8.

Covenant Day came up short against Providence Day in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, falling 62-55. Can Covenant Day avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
