Softball Game Preview: Beardstown Tigers vs. North Greene Spartans

The Beardstown Tigers are taking a road trip to challenge the North Greene Spartans at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Beardstown will be strutting in after a win while North Greene will be coming in after a defeat.

It was a proper cat-fight when Beardstown took on Camp Point Central on Monday. The Tigers sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-5 victory over the Panthers. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Tigers have posted against the Panthers since April 23, 2018.

Khloe Kearns spent all 11 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up 17 Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Kylynn Maltby and Bella Palmer did most of the damage at the plate: Maltby went 1-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and one stolen base, while Palmer went 2-for-5 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI Maltby has posted since back in March of 2024. Ava Quigley was another key player, getting on base in three of her six plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.

Meanwhile, North Greene was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They came up short against Calhoun, falling 11-1.

North Greene saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brooklyn Sharrow, who went 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI. That RBI marked the first that Sharrow has brought in this season.

The victory made it two in a row for Beardstown and bumps their season record up to 9-7. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of one runs across that stretch. As for North Greene, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-11.

Beardstown took their win against North Greene in their previous matchup back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 17-2 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Tigers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
