Preview: Soquel Knights vs. Aptos Mariners

The Soquel Knights will head out on the road to face off against the Aptos Mariners at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Soquel has four straight wins, Aptos has four straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Two weeks ago, Soquel's game was all tied up 7-7 at the half, but luckily for them it didn't stay that way. They came out on top against Palma by a score of 14-7. 14 seems to be a good number for Soquel as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of points in their previous game.

Soquel relied on the efforts of Sam Whelan, who threw for 148 yards and two touchdowns while completing 83.3% of his passes, and Jordan Mccord, who picked up 119 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, it was a hard-fought match, but Aptos had to settle for a 29-26 loss against Hollister on Friday.

Despite their loss, Aptos saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Matt Hood, who rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns, was perhaps the best of all. Jordan Torres also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.

Soquel's victory was their third straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 7-2. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-8 Santa Cruz and 2-7 Everett Alvarez (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 25.9% over those games). As for Aptos, their loss dropped their record down to 2-7.

Soquel was dealt a bruising 62-0 defeat at the hands of Aptos when the teams last played back in October of 2015. Can Soquel avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
