The defining moment for East (Salt Lake City) came on Sept. 16 when it handed California juggernaut De La Salle (Concord) a 23-21 loss.

De La Salle has lost just 13 games over the previous 25 seasons while East is two years removed from a losing season and had not won a state title since 1996. The win put East in the Xcellent 25 National Football Rankings presented by the Army National Guard for most of the remainder of the season. They currently reside at No. 19.

That win was one of the highlights of a season that included a victory over No. 14 Pulaski Academy (Little Rock, Ark.) as well as a Utah Class 4A state championship and an undefeated season. East tops the MaxPreps medium schools national football rankings.

American Heritage comes in at No. 2 after winning a Florida Class 5A state championship while Arizona Class 4A champion Saguaro is the No. 3 team.

The medium schools rankings are based on the MaxPreps National Football Computer Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. Medium schools are those that belong to state enrollment divisions that generally have between 1,000 and 2,000 students.
