Soccer Game Preview: Southwestern vs. Mater Dei

The Southwestern Piasa Birds will square off against the Mater Dei Knights at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Considering both teams were shutout in their prior games, the pair is probably coming into this one with something to prove.

Southwestern is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to five goals last Monday, they were much more limited against Greenville on Monday. They came up short against the Comets, falling 4-0. Southwestern haven't had much luck with Greenville recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.

Meanwhile, Mater Dei was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their ninth straight loss. They lost 7-0 to Althoff Catholic. While losing is never fun, Mater Dei can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois soccer rankings (they are ranked 265th, while Althoff Catholic are ranked 42nd).

Mater Dei was without their leading scorer, Amelia Beer, in Monday's game. With Beer sidelined, Natalie Lynch got her first action of the season.

Southwestern's defeat dropped their record down to 4-13-1. As for Mater Dei, their loss dropped their record down to 3-11.
