No. 6 St. John Bosco fights back late to upend No. 17 St. John's

Sixth-ranked St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), making its second cross-country trip of the season, needed the entire length of the game to finally overtake No. 17 St. John's (Washington, D.C.) on Saturday.

Relying heavily on backup quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei and getting all three touchdowns from George Holani, the Braves fought from behind to win 21-17 in the nation's capital.

Uiagalelei, one of the top-rated sophomore quarterbacks in the country, replaced dynamic two-year starter Re-Al Mitchell and fired a 21-yard touchdown pass to Holani to close to 17-14 in the fourth quarter. Holani then added a game-winning two-yard TD run in the final two minutes to help St. John Bosco improve to 4-1.

This was the second tough loss for St. John's against a ranked California team. Both games it appeared in control at halftime.

St. John's led De La Salle (Concord) 31-14 midway through the third quarter Sept. 1 only to lose 35-31.
On Saturday, St. John's took a 10-0 lead on a short touchdown run by Ron Cook Jr. At halftime, Bosco had just 104 yards of offense and St. John's, led by 80-yards rushing from Keilan Robinson, had 165.



Holani scored on a 4-yard run in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 10-7, but impressive quarterback Kevin Doyle completed an 82-yard touchdown pass to Mordecai MacDaniel to put St. John's back in command 17-7.

After Mitchell threw his second interception, Uiagalelei entered and led the Braves on two fourth-quarter touchdown drives. Meanwhile the Bosco defense didn't allow a first down in the fourth quarter.

This was a much better result for Bosco since the last time it ventured East. The Braves opened the season with a disheartening 9-3 overtime defeat at No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).
