Charlotte Catholic had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the eight-run drubbing they dealt Providence Academy on Thursday. The Cougars put the hurt on Providence Academy with a sharp 9-1 victory. The Cougars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 games by seven runs or more this season.

Charlotte Catholic got a great performance from Alex Hoffman as he struck out nine batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and only one walk). Hoffman has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Tate Olney, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high. Luke Danser was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double.

The win (which was Charlotte Catholic's third in a row) raised their record to 14-3. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Providence Academy, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-7 record this season.

Charlotte Catholic and Providence Academy should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in their respective state rankings. The Cougars will square off against Christ School at 7:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank advantage (18 vs. 80). Meanwhile, Providence Academy (ranked 97th) will meet Concord Christian (ranked 208th) at 5:00 p.m. on the 20th.
