1. Coeur d'Alene
2012-13 record: 21-6
Head coach: Dale Poffenroth

Sydney Williams and Brittany Tackett lead the way for the Vikings, who fell two points short of a state title last season. In fact, Coeur d’Alene has been eliminated the last three years by a total of four points, so coach Dale Poffenroth feels the basketball gods owe him a little bit of luck. The senior-dominated Vikings may not need much, though, as they look to be the class of the state.

2. Lewiston
2012-13 record: 16-7
Head coach: Pat Teichmer

Four starters return, and since four of those seven losses came at the hands of either Coeur d’Alene or state champ Post Falls (hit hard by graduation), the Bengals have reason for optimism. Emilee Schlader will be looked to for points and rebounding, and Lynzee Wilson must stabilize the backcourt.

3. Rocky Mountain (Meridian)
2012-13 record: 29-4
Head coach: Emery Roy

Emery Roy has won nine state titles in Idaho, and in his first year at Rocky Mountain, he led the Grizzlies to 29 wins and the state consolation title. But he has moved on. Though several seniors graduated, don’t expect much of a dropoff at Rocky Mountain.

4. Highland (Pocatello)
2012-13 record: 21-3
Head coach: Tony Green

Those three losses all came at the hands of Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene, but the loss of the Gonzalez twins will cause the Rams to take a step back. They are still a threat, though, especially as the new players settle in.

5. Centennial (Boise)
2012-13 record: 16-14
Head coach: TBA

So why’s a 14-loss team in the top five? Four transfers and a freshman point guard had insiders buzzing this summer, and though it may take a while for everything to mesh, there’s certainly a lot of potential at Centennial with Emery Roy coming on board.
