League recap: GAR Memorial climbs in state rankings with win

Wyoming Valley 2A/1A recap Nov. 7, 2012

GAR Memorial moved up to 279 from 308 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Wyoming Valley 2A/1A. The Grenadiers were able to make move up by defeating Elmer L. Meyers 50-12.

Wyoming Area extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Pittston, 27-20. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.

Wyoming Area's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Nick O?brien threw for 79 and one touchdown and Jordan Zezza had 42 yards receiving. On the ground O?brien chipped in 144 yards. Marty Michaels helped Wyoming Area's passing attack out by catching one ball for 27 yards.

GAR Memorial's Corey Moore and Lucas Benton have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Moore has thrown for 1259 yards this season, while Benton, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 41 catches for 610 yards. O?brien from Randy Spencer's team leads the league in rushing with 1442 yards.

Paul Wiedlich's team made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 6,531 from 7,144. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 50-12 victory over the Mohawks last week.
