Basketball Recap: Crystal River Pirates vs. Weeki Wachee Hornets

Crystal River was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They lost 63-38 to the Weeki Wachee Hornets. While losing is never fun, the Pirates can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 435th, while the Hornets are ranked 204th).

Several Pirates players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Sara Amsbury, who went 5 for 9 on her way to 11 points along with six blocks and five boards. The dominant performance gave Amsbury a new career-high in blocks. Another player making a difference was Keyrra Ruiz, who posted 15 points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals.

Weeki Wachee found their leader in sophomore Joelys Rodriquez, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten assists. Rodriquez is on a roll when it comes to assists, as she's now posted nine or more in the last three games she's played. Reese Halter was another key player, putting up 14 points and three steals.

Crystal River's loss dropped their record down to 7-12. As for Weeki Wachee, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 20-5 record this season.

Crystal River will welcome Santa Fe at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Weeki Wachee does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
