The Commodores, who had won their last 34 games, were held to 72 yards of total offense. Oxford quarterback Parker Adamson was well protected by his offensive line as he completed 14 of 21 passes for 136 yards and one touchdown. The decisive victory ended a six-game losing streak in the Crosstown Classic.

Coach Johnny Hill told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, "It's our time. We had a good football team and you can look at the film, but our kids outplayed them. They wanted it more."

* Meanwhile, Clairton (Pa.) barely extended its national-leading winning streak to 48 games with a narrow season-opening 22-20 victory over Chartiers-Houston (Houston, Pa.). To preserve the win, the Bears had to recover an onside kick and record one first down to run out the clock.

* Having played more games, Lafayette Central Catholic (Lafayette, Ind.) was able to tie Clairton at 48 straight following Friday's close 17-12 victory over Twin Lakes (Monticello, Ind.).

* Hornell (N.Y.) raised its winning streak to an even 40 by defeating Bishop Kearney (Rochester, N.Y.) 26-6.

* Waunakee (Wis.) won its 40th consecutive outing 24-14 over DeForest (Wis.). It also marked an amazing 87th straight victory at home, dating to 1998.

* Notching its third victory this year, 47-33 over West (Knoxville, Tenn.), Maryville (Tenn.) extended its winning streak to 32 games.

* Webb City (Mo.) also reached 32 straight wins (a school record) with a 30-15 victory over Har-Ber (Springdale, Ark.). The two-time defending Class 4 state champs set a state record with their 83rd consecutive regular-season triumph.
