Baseball Recap: Riverton Wins Going Away Against Layton

Riverton lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Layton, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Monday's match. Riverton put the hurt on Layton with a sharp 12-4 win on Monday. The result was nothing new for the Silverwolves, who have now won five contests by eight runs or more so far this season.

Bryce Mounteer and Gaige Woods did most of the damage at the plate: Mounteer scored a run and stole two bases while going 4-for-5, while Woods scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-5. Mounteer has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. McKade Ortiz was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.

They weren't the only ones working in the hit department: Riverton kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Layton only managed eight hits.

The victory made it two in a row for Riverton and bumps their season record up to 6-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 5 runs in those games. As for Layton, their defeat was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-8.

Riverton and Layton could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Utah Rankings. Riverton (ranked 29th) will meet Pleasant Grove (ranked fourth) at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Layton will face off against Skyridge at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday down 49 places (59 vs. 10).
