Basketball Recap: Cheyenne Wells Comes Up Short

After flying high against South Baca [Campo/Vilas/Pritchett] on Friday, Cheyenne Wells came back down to earth. The Cheyenne Wells Tigers took a 46-35 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Hi-Plains Patriots on Saturday. The Tigers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Patriots apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Despite the loss, Cheyenne Wells still got an impressive performance from Paige Ryser, who posted nine points in addition to seven boards and seven steals. Ryser has been hot for a while, having posted three or more steals the last 13 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Aubry Carroll, who scored six points.

Even though they lost, Cheyenne Wells smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in six consecutive matchups.

Hi-Plains found their leader in freshman Cambria Seaman, who dropped a double-double on 26 points and ten rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Seaman has scored all season. Maggie Gorton was another key player, putting up nine points along with eight boards and four steals.

Cheyenne Wells' defeat dropped their record down to 9-6. As for Hi-Plains, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-5.

A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Cheyenne Wells Tigers duke it out with the Kit Carson Wildcats at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Hi-Plains, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 44-31 loss against Evangel Christian Academy on the 3rd.
