Baseball Recap: Negaunee Wins Going Away Against Hancock

After losing to Hancock the last time they met, Negaunee decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Miners blew past the Bulldogs 8-2 on Saturday. Considering the Miners have won three games by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Negaunee got a great performance from Carsen Belanger as he tossed 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. The dominant performance also gave Belanger a new career-high in strikeouts (four).

On the hitting side, Jack Siik and Ian Engstrom did most of the damage at the plate: Siik got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two doubles, while Engstrom went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Negaunee is undefeated when Siik posts two or more runs, but 1-3 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Owen Cardinal, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Negaunee hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive matches.

Negaunee now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Hancock, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Negaunee will head out to challenge Marquette at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Hancock, they will venture away from home to square off against Westwood at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
