Basketball Recap: Avon Takes Down Ranked Westfield

On Friday, Avon faced Westfield in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Avon Orioles took down the Westfield Shamrocks 55-39. This was payback for the Orioles, who suffered a 62-46 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Avon's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jedidiah Minnett led the charge by going 5 of 7 on his way to 14 points. The team also got some help courtesy of DeAndre Lott-Hancock, who went 6 for 8 en route to 14 points and seven rebounds.

Avon was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Westfield only racked up seven assists.

Several Shamrocks players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Durante Morton, who posted ten points and four steals. That's the most steals Morton has posted since back in February of 2024. Brock Detamore was another key player, putting up eight points.

Avon's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-2. As for Westfield, the loss snapped their winning streak at ten games and leaves them with a 12-2 record.
