Basketball Recap: Gena Benavidez's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Vela over Rowe

Vela has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were three points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 46-43 heartbreaker at the hands of the Rowe Warriors. The Sabercats were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Warriors earlier this season, when they won 51-49.

Vela lost on Friday despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Gena Benavidez, who posted nine points. Aurora Guzman was another key player, putting up six points.

Vela's record is now 23-10. As for Rowe, their win bumped their record up to 25-10.

Vela and Rowe should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. Vela will take on Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Southwest at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday up 1,020 places (322 vs. 1342). Similarly, Rowe (ranked 278th) will meet Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial (ranked 1298th) at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
