Softball Game Preview: Mica Mountain Thunderbolts vs. Sabino Sabercats

The Mica Mountain Thunderbolts will head out on the road to square off against the Sabino Sabercats at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The last three games Mica Mountain has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.

Mica Mountain is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Walden Grove just ended the team's four-game winning streak on Wednesday. They fell just short of the Red Wolves by a score of 3-1.

Meanwhile, Sabino earned a 5-1 win over Ironwood Ridge on Friday.

Avery Nielson made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 15 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Alyssa Aguirre, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 4-for-4. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Mia Acosta, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Sabino is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-10 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.9 runs over those games. As for Mica Mountain, their loss dropped their record down to 13-10.

Mica Mountain came out on top in a nail-biter against Sabino in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, sneaking past 3-1. Do the Thunderbolts have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Sabercats turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
