Baseball Recap: Fountain Valley Comes Up Short

The matchup between Fountain Valley and Newport Harbor on Wednesday hardly resembled the 1-0 effort from their previous meeting. The Barons fell just short of the Sailors by a score of 10-9. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Barons, who until this contest were averaging 3.42 runs allowed.

Josh Grack was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.

In other batting news, Miles Hiskey was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-4 with one home run and three runs. That home run was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Ethan Cortez, who scored a run while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

This is the second loss in a row for Fountain Valley and nudges their season record down to 11-8. Even worse, they were so close both times: the defeats came by an average of only one runs. As for Newport Harbor, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 16-5.

While Fountain Valley had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 3:15 p.m. on Friday.
