Softball Game Preview: Gilbert Yellowjackets vs. Nonnewaug Chiefs

Gilbert hasn't had much luck against Nonnewaug recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Yellowjackets will face off against the Chiefs at 3:45 p.m.

Gilbert is headed into Wednesday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their 12th straight game dating back to last season back in April. They lost 11-2 to Shepaug Valley.

Meanwhile, Nonnewaug put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They walked away with a 12-8 win over Northwestern Regional. That's two games straight that the Chiefs have won by exactly four runs.

Jordan Kovach was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Gianna DeLorenzo was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Jade Rinaldi, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Nonnewaug's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-0. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 19.0 runs over those games. As for Gilbert, their loss dropped their record down to 0-3.

Gilbert suffered a grim 26-0 defeat to Nonnewaug when the teams last played back in April. Can the Yellowjackets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
