Softball Game Preview: Sumrall Bobcats vs. Poplarville Hornets

The Sumrall Bobcats will take on the Poplarville Hornets at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Sumrall will be looking to extend their current eight-game winning streak.

Sumrall had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt West Marion on Friday. The Bobcats never let the Trojans get on the board and left with a 10-0 win. The Bobcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 15 matchups by six runs or more this season.

Sumrall got a great performance from Avery Smith as she didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched.

At the plate, Kynnedy Lumpkins was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Ella Robertson was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Sumrall kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as West Marion only managed six hits.

Meanwhile, Poplarville fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against St. Patrick on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Fighting Irish by a score of 6-5.

Sumrall pushed their record up to 23-5 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.5 runs over those games. As for Poplarville, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-9-1.

Sumrall was able to grind out a solid victory over Poplarville in their previous matchup back in March, winning 8-4. Do the Bobcats have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Hornets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
