Baseball Recap: St. Xavier Victorious

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but St. Xavier ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They skirted past the Bowling Green Purples 9-8. The Tigers haven't had any issues with the Purples recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.

Ryan Holmes tossed a big game, tossing 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Brodie Benefield, who scored four runs and stole a base while going 4-for-5. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaxon Coomer, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

St. Xavier kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits in three consecutive matches.

St. Xavier pushed their record up to 8-2 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.7 runs over those games. As for Bowling Green, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-3.

St. Xavier and Bowling Green should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Kentucky Rankings. The Tigers will challenge St. Charles East at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday with a big rank advantage (14 vs. 143). Meanwhile, Bowling Green (ranked eighth) will meet Glasgow (ranked 141st) at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
