WPIAL A Big Seven recap October 8, 2013

Fans got a thrill when Nathan Block and Cameron Smith connected against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. The connection was good for 90 yards, the longest such play in WPIAL A Big Seven this season.

Neshannock's Eli Owens rumbled for the longest rushing play in the league this season in his game against Rochester last week. Owens' team defeated the Rams as he sprinted for 90 yards on the play and finished with 291 in all.

South Side's dynamic duo of Block and Smith proved tough for the Chargers to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Block threw for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns and Smith had 171 yards receiving.

Owens was a beast in the backfield as Neshannock bested Rochester.

He went 9-16 with 1 interception.

Thanks to the talents of Ernie Burkes and Owens, the Lancers have been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Burkes is tops in the league in passing with 541 yards, while Owens has rushed for 927 yards this season. Tops in the league in receiving yards is Laurel's Clayton Sharek, with 248 yards on 9 catches.

Neshannock's Owens is a mere 73 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. In 88 carries Owens has accumulated 927 yard this year.

One of the league's premier quarterbacks will face off with its top pass rusher when the Lancers and Bill Daniels' team face off next week.

An important game coming up in WPIAL A Big Seven this week will be when Western Beaver takes on Sto-Rox. The Golden Beavers are in fourth place, while the Vikings are in first place.

Shenango scaled the state rankings by moving to 377 from 407 this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Wildcats were able to move up by beating Riverview 35-14.
