Basketball Recap: Jordan Samuel's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Lugoff-Elgin over West Florence

Lugoff-Elgin was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their sixth straight defeat. They received a blow as they fell 54-37 to the West Florence Knights. The Demons were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Knights earlier this season, when they won 53-39.

Several Demons players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jordan Samuel, who posted 20 points and three steals. That was a full 54.1% of Lugoff-Elgin's points, marking the seventh time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Teryn Hobson, who earned 12 points in addition to six blocks and three steals.

Even though they lost, Lugoff-Elgin smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 11 consecutive matches.

West Florence found their leader in sophomore Kara Fluharty, who scored six points and 12 boards. Those 12 rebounds set a new season-high mark for Fluharty. Gabreille Gunter was another key player, dropping a double-double on 15 points and 11 boards.

Lugoff-Elgin's loss dropped their record down to 8-13. As for West Florence, their win was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 2-12.

Lugoff-Elgin didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 58-33 defeat against Sumter on the 28th. As for West Florence, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 57-10 loss against Spring Valley on the 29th.
